The Story of Lions International Foundation
Lions International was founded by Melvin Jones in America, in 1917, as the largest national organization for social support. At the first meeting of Lions Club, in a Chicago hotel, there were only twelve people present, and in 1927 the International Association of Lions Clubs had sixty thousand members. The ideas of respect to personality, honest business, help to the poor and loyalty to friends proved to be common to people from all over the world.
Lionism Principles
The "International Association of Lions Clubs" with the headquarters at Oak Brook, near Chicago, includes 44, 550 Clubs. People of different race, age and religion were united by purple and yellow banner. The official colors of the organization are purple and golden. In any part of the world Lions will recognize each other by the emblem: the letter L and two lion profiles. There are two imposing lions: one with pride looks to the past, and the other looks to the future with confidence. LIONS is an abbreviation of several words: Liberty, Intelligence and Our Nations Safety. The LIONS motto is "We serve".
Who Are the Lions?
There are about one and a half million members of Lions Club in the world. You can meet them in any part of our planet - in USA, Japan, Germany, Jamaica and Russia. Lions movement has spread to 185 states. They are proud and noble, gentle and generous, they are opposed to war and violence, they prefer love and peace. You can't believe that? May be in the wild the king of animals is different, but the members of International Association of Lions Clubs are like this.
The Main Aim of Lions
The main aim of Lions is to serve people. The program of providing help to deaf, blind and visually impaired people, lonely and destitute elderly people, children who faced poverty and loneliness, was adopted when the Lions Movement was first organized, and it remains urgent in our time. In the world there are a lot of hospices, hospitals and homes for elderly people sponsored or built by Lions. Since 1982 Lions Clubs have been organizing campaigns against drug and alcohol addiction, for mentally and physically healthy life. Everyone who is sick or lonely, who has suffered from wars and natural disasters, who cannot cope with the strokes of fate, in other words, everyone who needs care and people's attention, will find Lions' help and support.
Lions Clubs in Russia
The first Lions Clubs in Russia were set up in 1990. Now only in Moscow there are more than thirty of them. There are Lions Clubs in St. Petersburg, Murmansk, Novgorod, Yaroslavl and other cities. It turned out that in modern Russia, as well as in all the territory of the former soviet state, there are a lot of people ready to help those who are in trouble.
