Why "Lions"?

This question worried not only the commission for registration of public associations and the members of the Ministry of Justice, but also common Belarus people who heard the strange name for the first time. It seemed that in the territory of Belarus there are no lions… The reason for giving this name is simple: The LIONS CLUBS International is an international association, the name of which is known and respected all over the world. Lions Clubs were first organized and have existed since 1917. By now the movement has spread to 194 countries of the world. Almost in every city of Europe, Japan, South and North America, Asia and Africa there are dozens and, sometimes, even hundreds of Lions Clubs.

The founder of Lions Movement is Melvin Jones, who lived in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He was a successful businessman and took an active part in charity. Mr. Jones was especially interested in the problems with which blind and visually impaired people face in cities. He invented a "white walking stick", the symbol of blindness, and set up a chain of schools for dog guides. Many Melvin Jones' colleagues, public figures and just active citizens supported his charity. As the time passed, the friends' meetings became regular, and an idea to set up a club appeared. The club needed a name, and the members chose the word LIONS - an abbreviation of several key words, and also a name of a brave and generous animal, the king.

The members of Lions Club have developed an Ethical Code consisting of eight points proclaiming voluntarism, philanthropic principles of work and ban on using the Club's membership for achieving selfish aims.

The idea appeared to be so attractive that in a few years in USA there were several hundreds Lions Clubs. In some time the ideas and principles of Lions' practice spread to Europe, Asia and Latin America. At present Lion Clubs all over the world have more than one million seven hundred thousand members. It is the largest social organization in the world.

"Lions Clubs" International Association is a member of UNO, having the rights of a state. Each year UNO celebrates "Lions' Day", when the UNO General Secretary meets the President of "Lions Clubs" International, and important charitable events are held. Lions International regularly makes large donations to the UNO Children's Fund (UNISEF), UNESCO, the Fund for Catastrophes and Natural Disasters.
