Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa / Agnes Bojaxhiu

(1910-1997)

She was considered to be a saint even in her lifetime. She had a hard and joyful mission to bring people the good tidings that God is Love, and that the sense of being of every human is to love and to be loved.

In the XX century she became not only a symbol of mercy, she, together with her lay sisters, had real power, which could not be ignored. People admired her, revered her and worshipped her.

Mother Teresa was born on August, 27, 1910, in Skopje, in an Albanian Catholic family. When she was eighteen, she went to an Irish Catholic Abbey. In 1931 she took her religious vows as a nun and chose the name Teresa after a Franciscan nun named Teresa canonized in 1927, who was known for her kindness and mercy. Mother Teresa followed her way. For about 20 years after that she was a teacher in St. Mary's school in Calcutta.

On September, 10, 1946 she was blessed to help the poor and destitute, and in some time she founded an order of the Missionaries of Charity. At first they taught poor children to read and write, and later they started helping people suffering from leprosy and other sick people. The dying beggars from all over the Calcutta were brought to Mother Teresa.

Since 1965 the order expanded outside India. Now it has 400 branches in 111 countries of the world, and 700 hospices in 120 countries. Although Teresa herself thought her work to be "a drop in the sea", she was internationally recognized. In 1964 she received the Jawaharlal Nehru award, and two years later she was awarded the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize. In 1979 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

нобелевский лауреат A Nobel Prize winner, Mother Teresa had a lot of missions. In 1982, at the request of the Pope John Paul II, she visited Lebanon as a peace emissary, although before she preferred to avoid politics. В In 1985 she gave a speech at a UNO General Assembly organized to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the organization. In the same 1985, Mother Teresa together with the Archbishop of New-York opened the first hospice for people with AIDS. At Mother Teresa's request three people dying from AIDS were freed from prison and taken to the new hospice. In 1988-89 the Missionaries of Charity opened branches in Moscow, Yerevan and Spitaka.
